My First Day as a Junior Elf Reporter
by Pixie

Dear Diary (and also the entire North Pole, because this is being published)! 📰

It's me, Pixie! The North Pole Tribune has asked me to share the story of my very first day as a junior elf reporter — partly because readers requested it, and partly (I suspect) because the editor thinks it's funny. Both reasons are valid.

5:00 AM: The Preparation ⏰

I woke up three hours early and laid out my reporter kit: one notebook (sparkly), seven backup pencils (you never know), my press badge (I laminated it myself, twice), and a thermos of extra-hot cocoa for bribing sources. I'd like to state for the record that "bribing sources with cocoa" was in the official training manual. Chapter four!

7:30 AM: My First Assignment 📋

Editor Quillfeather looked at me over his tiny spectacles and said, "Pixie, your assignment is the Sock Report."

The SOCK REPORT. Counting how many socks the Lost Sock Recovery Department had recovered that week. The least magical assignment in the entire newsroom.

I said, "I will make it the best Sock Report this newspaper has ever seen."

He said, "Please just make it accurate."

9:00 AM: The Sock Report Goes Sideways 🧦

Here's the thing about the Lost Sock Recovery Department: nobody had ever asked WHERE the socks come from. Recovered from where? Lost by whom?

Forty-five minutes of interviews later, I had uncovered the story of the century: the socks come through a small magical vortex behind Dryer #12 in the elf laundry. That's right. Every sock that vanishes from a dryer ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD ends up at the North Pole. The elves sort them, wash them, and — this is the beautiful part — knit the unmatched ones into tiny sweaters for the workshop mice.

YOUR MISSING SOCKS ARE KEEPING MICE WARM. You're welcome, Earth!

11:30 AM: I Am Briefly Banned From the Stables 🦌

Flush with sock-related success, I went to the reindeer stables to get a quote from Dasher about flight training. Important journalism lesson I learned: do not sneak up on a napping reindeer to ask him how he "responds to allegations that Comet is faster."

He responded by leaping four feet straight up, knocking over a water trough, and soaking three stable elves. I have been asked to "schedule interviews in advance going forward." Noted!

2:00 PM: The Big Break 💫

While drying off in the kitchen (long story, see above), I overheard Mrs. Claus mention that the cocoa supply was running low — with the toy production season kickoff only weeks away. Cocoa shortage! At the NORTH POLE! Before production season!

I chased that story all afternoon: interviewed the pantry elves, traced the supply sleigh schedules, and discovered the shipment had simply been mislabeled as "brown paint" and delivered to the Art Department. The Art Department, to their credit, had been wondering why the paint smelled delicious and why they all felt so cozy.

The Tribune ran my story on page one: "COCOA FOUND: Art Department Cleared of All Charges." My first front page!

6:00 PM: The Lesson 🌟

Editor Quillfeather read my Sock Report, looked at me for a long time, and said, "Pixie, you were assigned 200 words about socks and you filed 2,000 words about an interdimensional laundry vortex."

Then he smiled and said, "Never change."

I'm not planning to!

Reporting with maximum enthusiasm,

P.S. — The workshop mice sent me a thank-you card for the sock story. It was the size of a postage stamp and signed with seventeen tiny paw prints. It is now framed above my desk and it is my most treasured possession.

Thank you for reading!
